The Marans breed originated in France and is well known for their dual purpose (egg and meat) production and calm dispositions.
The black copper variety has been popular for its stunning dark chocolate egg color (the darkest of all Marans varieties) and striking plumage.
The Deathlayer (Westfälische Totleger) breed originates in Germany and was imported to the United States in 2018. This rare breed of chicken can be traced back more than 400 years.
These birds will be excellent egg producers for the family as well as a beautiful yard "ornament" and conversation piece!
The Cream Legbar is the standard by which all other production blue egg layers are measured. They sport the best blue egg color with high egg production, and our stock is tested and confirmed homozygous for the blue eggshell gene (O/O) as of 2025.*

Our flock exhibits exceptional cream color per breed SOP, with several birds carrying the recessive white gene for plumage color, meaning a White Sport Legbar is a rare possibility!
Their slender build, petite crests, and curious personalities make them the perfect addition to any flock! Additionally, Cream Legbars are an autosexing breed, meaning sex can be identified at hatch, generation after generation.
This Rainbow Layer Hybrid was created by Hog Lake Homestead specifically for the purpose of offering sexed pullets with a range of egg color possibilities with medium green, olive and medium brown being the most common.
These birds are the result Hog Lake Homestead's own olive egger breeding program producing deep olive and dark brown egg colors. Adult birds will share many of the traits of our Marans flock, a cold hardy breed with a calm temperment and self sufficiency; perfect for a penned or free range environment.
